Lee Krasner: Burning Candle, 1955

  • Artist: Lee Krasner
  • Materials: Oil, paper, and canvas on linen
  • Dimension: 58 1/8 × 39 in
  • Category: Painting

In Burning Candles, Lee Krasner assembles parts of her earlier works- cut and torn drawings and paintings with new brushwork- into a vibrant collage. The vertical shapes of the painting resemble candles, and this provides the title for this artwork. Krasner chooses to use earthy tones- browns, ochres, blacks, whites, and greys, which permit a warmth and introspection. This artwork exists in a suite of works done between 1953-1955, when Krasner took old works of hers, and at times of Pollock’s, and repurposed them to discuss and explore the future of her artwork. Krasner felt there was potential in thinking about the past and transforming her own past.
